Tom has been part of Netier’s story for more than a decade. From stepping in for what was meant to be a temporary role to becoming a key leader in building our cyber capabilities, Tom’s journey reflects the growth, opportunity, and people-first culture that defines Netier.
How did your journey at Netier begin?
I started back in 2011. I was originally only supposed to be filling in for a few weeks while Gordon and Michael were away. Gordon very kindly offered me a full-time role when they returned, much to my surprise! When I joined, I was the fifth employee, so it’s incredible to have been a part of the growth of Netier. It’s nice reflecting on the journey from time to time.
What drew you to Netier, and how has it shaped your growth?
The people and the variety of work. I’m lucky to work with some incredible people (both team members and clients) who have had a massive impact on me, both professionally and personally. I’ve been shaped by the people I’ve had the privilege to work with. Also, no two days are the same at Netier, there’s always a new technology, project, or challenge.
How do your personal passions align with your work at Netier?
I’ve always loved learning (if it’s something I’m interested in) and working to a greater goal. Netier has given me both – I’m constantly learning, and we’re all working to make technology an enabler for the clients we support. I love being busy but also feeling like I’ve achieved something at the end of the day. Something I can confidently say happens a lot.
What has been your most fulfilling experience at Netier?
Whilst I’ve been lucky to lead some exciting technology initiatives, I’d have to say the most fulfilling experience has been watching our team members grow. We’ve had a lot of team members join us straight out of university or from different career paths and they’ve developed into Senior Systems Engineers, Team Leads, or Specialists. Seeing those team members grow and develop, and then mentor the next generation is something special to watch.
How has your role allowed you to grow?
My career at Netier probably hasn’t taken the most conventional route and I love that. I started as a Systems Engineer – Senior Engineer – Project Manager – Project Team Manager – Principal Consultant – I’m now focusing on building our cyber capabilities. I’d say I’m still growing and that’s one of the great things about Netier – you’re given the opportunity to grow.
